Toni Furlan Biography

Born in Cappella Maggiore on 3 December 1913, he approached the plastic arts as a child following the work of his father, a stonecutter and ceramist. He attended the Art Institute of Venice, but due to military service first and then the war, his artistic interests were interrupted. At the end of the 1940s he opened a studio in Milan with his brother-in-law Toni Vendrame, starting an intense activity as a ceramist, collaborating with Baciocchi and Gio' Ponti. In 1946 and 1948 he exhibited at the Mostra d'Arte Sacra in Bergamo and in 1949 at the City of Bergamo Painting and Sculpture Prize. In 1950 he began a period of teaching at the Art Institute of Cortina d'Ampezzo, where he also opened a studio. Here he creates two large sculptures for the Grand Hotel Savoia. In 1962 the "Ceramica Cortina" opened in Cappella Maggiore, whose products went on to decorate prestigious buildings in Italy, such as the RAI regional headquarters in Palazzo Labia in Venice. The four decorative panels in the atrium of the Cappella Maggiore elementary school, depicting themes of school life, are from 1964. Since the 1960s he has exhibited in numerous collective exhibitions in Italy including the "Collective Exhibition of Vittorio Artists" in Vittorio Veneto in 1966. He passed away in Vittorio Veneto on 25 April 1980.
