Michael Fussell (1927 – 1974) was a painter, collagist and teacher who made figurative and abstract work, with a special interest in time and the sea. He was born in Southampton and educated in Bournemouth, Hampshire. He studied at City & Guilds Art School, St Martin's School of Art from 1946 to 1949, and at the Royal College of Art, 1949–52, under Rodrigo Moynihan. He taught at St Martin's and from 1964 was director of fine arts at the Wimbledon School of Art. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and Young Contemporaries and had a first solo exhibition at the Beaux Arts Gallery in 1956. The Tate Gallery and the Arts Council in 1976 organized a retrospective of his work. He lived for many years in London and was married to the artist Evelyn Williams.
