Andrea Gabriellini Biography

Andrea Gabbriellini (Molina di Quosa, 1933) is an Italian painter. For art, he interrupted his economic studies at the University of Pisa at the age of twenty-three and got married a year later. The family's needs forced him to divide painting with other jobs for several years. This does not prevent him from painting effectively: his works obtain first prizes together with important recognitions and soon the Tuscan artist is considered by various critics to be one of the most significant in the panorama of contemporary art. Eclectic painter, self-taught, he has been working on linguistic research since 1953, carrying out a vast body of work that goes from the figurative beginnings to the most extreme consequences of anicocity through complex phases grouped into "cycles" with suggestive names such as: Explorations, Solitudes, Gardens, Symbols, Andromeda, Crisis, Pages, Living space, Barriers, Shatterings, Spells, Necessary spaces, Barriers 2, Shatterings 2, Scratched cardboards, Painted sculptures, Spaces. In the fifties and sixties he met some protagonists of the American avant-garde in New York and in Milan he confronted the Nouveaux Realistes (Yves Klein in particular who exhibited at Guido Le Noci's Galleria Apollinaire in Brera, where Gabbriellini exhibited many years later presented by Gillo Dorfles, who christened his works on poor cardboard "Scratched cartoons"). While leaning towards ideals common to the great artists from overseas and beyond the Alps, he deliberately remains outside of currents and trends, preferring to carry out his investigations in isolation in his studies in Tuscany. In 1975, after participating in the Barcelona Biennial, he fell into a long crisis, which had already given rise to its first signs in 1972 while he was participating in the Panorama of Contemporary Graphics at the Pushkin Museum in Moscow. He recovered from it in 1986, purified by the isolation into which he had retreated after burning a large number of works because he rejected the result. There are over 50 solo exhibitions held in galleries, art galleries and museums in various countries around the world and numerous participations in national and international events, art fairs, expos, exhibitions and awards. Various public solo exhibitions have been dedicated to him in Tuscany. Among the latest: the city of Pisa at Palazzo Lanfranchi (1991), the city of Pontedera at the "O. Cirri" Art Center (2003), the Regional Council of Tuscany at Palazzo Panciatichi in Florence (2004), the city of Lucca at Villa Bottini (2006), the Piaggio Foundation at the Piaggio Museum (2008). His works are kept in public museums and art galleries, including: Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Museo Espanol de Arte Contemporaneo in Madrid, Musèe National d'Art Moderne in Paris, Museum of Modern Art in New York, Museum of Modern Art in Moscow , Gallery of Modern Art of Gallarate, Municipal Gallery of Modern Art of Jesi, National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art of Rome, Museum of Modern Art of El Cairo, Civic Gallery of Modern Art of Sassoferrato, Carlo Servolini Art Gallery of Collesalvetti (Livorno), Civic Gallery of Modern Art of Arezzo, Hidden Museum of the Province of Pisa, Art Gallery of the Council of the Tuscany Region of Florence, Collection of the School of Specialization in History of Art of the University of Siena, ((Museum Raffaele De Grada)) of S. Gimignano (Siena).
