Alberto Helios Gagliardo was born in Genoa in 1893. He studied at the Accademia Ligustica di Belle Arti in Genoa and in 1925 he exhibited at the International Exhibition of the Grand Palais in Paris. Starting from 1931, he participated in numerous important exhibitions abroad. He was very close to the Ligurian engraving group of the "Tarasca" and was also the holder of the engraving chair at the Ligustica Academy of Fine Arts.
At the beginning of his career, his work approached the pointillist current and, between 1919 and 1921, he adopted the symbolist style, sometimes recalling, in the dreamy atmospheres and the softness of the line, the painting of the English Pre-Raphaelites. Later, he concentrated on a social theme, using harder and more essential forms with strong tonal and luminous contrasts.
Gagliardo died in Genoa in 1987.
