Giovan Battista Galizzi Biography

Giovan Battista Galizzi was born in Bergamo on 17 May 1882. In 1896 he enrolled at the Accademia Carrara, directed at that time by Cesare Tallone, who was succeeded, the following year, by the painter Ponziano Loverini; by express wish of the latter G. was admitted to the school of statues and the nude without having to attend the elementary school of plaster casts. In 1899 he attended the perspective lessons held by the scenographer Angelo Rota at the School of applied art to industry. In the spring of 1900 he was authorized by the management of Carrara to be absent for a month to assist his father in the decoration of the church of Gottolengo, near Brescia. In 1927 G. received the important task of illustrating The Betrothed in the commemorative edition of the centenary of the novel's publication, commissioned by the Italian Institute of Graphic Arts. The panels from the series were exhibited in the same year at the III Biennial of Decorative Art in Monza and were rewarded with a special certificate of merit. G. died in Bergamo on 2 February 1963.
