Giuseppe Gallo (Rogliano 1954) In Rome he attended the faculty of architecture and in 1976 he held his first exhibition at the Galleria Ferro di Cavallo. In 1979 he exhibited for the first time abroad at the Europa 79 exhibition in Stuttgart. And the same year he established the his studio in San Lorenzo in the spaces of the former Pastificio Cerere. In 1980 he held a solo show at the Ugo Ferranti Gallery, where he often exhibited in the following years. With Bruno Ceccobelli and Gianni Dessi', he participated in two important group exhibitions at the Groninger Museum in Groningen in 1981 and at the Salvatore Ala Gallery in New York in 1983. In 1984 with the same artists, and with Domenico Bianchi, Nunzio, Piero Pizzi Cannella and Marco Tirelli, participates in the Ateliers exhibition, curated by Achille Bonito Oliva. From the early 1980s, having abandoned the conceptual methods of his early days, Gallo dedicated himself to defining a new way of understanding the painted image, also considering the use of an ancient technique such as encaustic. The paintings come alive with brightly colored images and symbols that move on the limit that separates figuration from abstraction. In many works he combines details of images without respecting a stringent logic, with the intention of generating an alienating and revealing effect in the viewer. In 1985 he exhibited for the first time at the Sperone Gallery in Rome and the following year at the Sperone Westwater Gallery in New York. In 1986 he participated in the Rome Quadrennial and the Venice Biennale, where in 1990 he had a personal room. On this occasion Gallo presents an installation of sculptures and drawings in which different expressive modes coexist, as will happen in many works of the nineties. Important solo exhibitions have recently been dedicated to his work by the Galleria Civica d'Arte Moderna of Spoleto, by Macro of Rome and the Kunsthalle of Mannheim.
