Raffaello Gambogi, born on 27 July 1874 in Livorno, studied painting as a self-taught painter. Thanks to a scholarship offered by the municipality of Livorno, he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. People, farmers and humble characters immersed in the environment are subjects dear to him, sometimes portrayed in choral scenes of great compositional rigor. From the early 1900s he lived in Antignano, south of Livorno, but between 1905 and 1909 he was admitted to the Volterra mental hospital to treat a nervous disorder. Subsequently, towards maturity he focused his attention on natural or urban views, with great attention to luminous vibrations and an increasingly full-bodied, rapid and synthetic brushstroke. He died alone at the age of 68 in the city of Livorno on 8 February 1943.
