Mauro Gandolfi was born in Bologna in 1764. At just sixteen years old he left his family to move to France and enlist in the royal Corsican regiment. After five years he returned to Bologna to attend the Clementina Academy, perfecting his artistic techniques. He obtained numerous prizes and in 1794 he was appointed professor of Figure, a position he held until 1797. Gandolfi loved travelling, so much so that he even went to the United States of America. From this last experience he wrote a diary which highlights his remarkable skills as a memoirist, like many of his writings. In the final phase of his activity, Gandolfi dedicated himself above all to the engraving and translation of famous paintings. Mauro Gandolfi died in Bologna on 4 January 1834.
