Gaetano Ganodolfi Biography

Gaetano Gandolfi (San Matteo della Decima, 31 August 1734 – Bologna, 20 June 1802). He was born into a family of artists. His brother Ubaldo, his son Mauro and his nephew Democritus were also painters. He studied at the Accademia Clementina in Bologna, where his teachers were Felice Torelli and Ercole Lelli. He also studied sculpture and won numerous prizes in competitions organized by the academy, in the portrait and sculpture sections. In 1760 he spent a year in Venice, where he had the opportunity to study the works of Tiepolo and other Venetian painters. He also traveled to England. Returning to Bologna, he created frescoes and canvases in various churches and convents in Bologna. In the Basilica of San Petronio he painted the Madonna of S. Luca and saints Emidio and Ivo. In 1775 he painted the large canvas The Wedding at Cana (530 x 679 cm) for the convent of the Canons Regular of San Salvatore in Bologna, considered one of his masterpieces, now preserved in the National Art Gallery of Bologna. His works are preserved in museums and art galleries around the world, including the Louvre in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. In the Terzi cloister of the Certosa di Bologna there is a funerary monument to Gaetano and Democrito Gandolfi , attributed to the sculptor Giovanni Putti.
