Francesco Garbelli (1962 - ) graduated from the Faculty of Architecture of the Polytechnic of Milan in 1990 and lives and works in Milan. Confirming his attention to the urban context, he carried out his first public art interventions, focusing his interest on toponymy and road signs. Between the second half of the 80s and the first half of the 90s he carried out a series of interventions in various cities in Italy and Europe, inventing new signs with subtle irony, thanks to which he is today considered a true precursor of street and urban art worldwide. In the 90s he was part of the group “Italian Ironic Conceptualism” with which he participated in a series of exhibitions in museums and galleries in Italy and Germany. Some of his works become part of the VAF-Stiftung collection, now kept at the MART in Trento and Rovereto. In addition to urban installations and public art projects, his production has involved various techniques, from resin sculptures with which he recreates real "pieces of the sea" of extraordinary visual effectiveness, to the use of video and photography.
