Domenico Gargiulo, nicknamed Micco Spadaro, was born in Naples around 1609. According to sources, he demonstrated an early and natural inclination for drawing. This pushed him to practice perseveringly, copying prints and drawings of recognized masters, until, when he reached the age of eighteen, he was able to enter Aniello Falcone's workshop. His passion for drawing then led him to specialize in the representation of landscapes and city scenes in which many characters appeared, described meticulously and with almost chronicle-like attention. Gargiulo, who from a young age practiced tirelessly on the graphic works of others, put together a collection of drawings by famous masters including Raphaelesque sheets.
The painter died in Naples in 1675.
