Giovanna Garzoni Biography

Giovanna Garzoni, born in Ascoli Piceno in 1600, was a very talented painter and miniaturist. Raised in a family of goldsmiths, Garzoni cultivated her passion for painting from an early age. After attending the calligraphy school of the master Giacomo Rogni, he moved to Naples where he was fortunate enough to work for important clients such as the Spanish viceroy, Duke of Alcalà.
Subsequently, Garzoni moved to Turin where she was called to paint a portrait of Christina of France. In 1637 her patron Vittorio Amedeo of Savoy died and the painter decided to abandon the city. In the mid-1940s, Garzoni moved to Florence where she worked for the Medici on various commissions. During her stay in Florence, the painter created a beautiful figurative herbarium which established her as a great scientific illustrator, endowed with a style all her own in which attention to scientific details and a personal interpretation of light and color were combined.
In 1651 she moved to Rome, where she was awarded the title of Accademica di San Luca. At the Academy, Garzoni left a precious album of miniatures and all her possessions.
He died between 10 and 15 February 1670 in Rome.
