Lorenzo Gelati was born in Florence in 1824. He studied with Carlo Markò father and was one of his students at the Florentine Promotrice in 1848 with the work “View of the Fort of S. Miniato al Monte”. In 1849 he presented the “Veduta del Valdarno” to the Academy, demonstrating his ability in painting from life.
Gelati, a regular visitor to the Caffè Michelangelo, decorated the artists' room with mural paintings in 1852, with the two paintings of "Sunset" and "Ruins with the Moon".
Together with his friends Carlo and Andrea Markò, Emilio Donnini, Serafino De Tivoli, Carlo Ademollo, Alessandro La Volpe and Saverio Altamura, Gelati often went to Staggia, in the Sienese countryside, to work on paintings from life.
In 1858 he presented the first real View of Florence to the Promoter of Genoa. In '73 he participated in the Mostra degli Amatori e Cultori with three Tuscan landscapes. Gelati had constant relationships with the Macchiaiolo group and in 1860 in Seravezza he collaborated with Telemaco Signorini, Vincenzo Cabianca and Cristiano Banti.
Gelati died in Florence in May 1899.
