Edoardo Gelli was born on 4 September 1852 in Savona. He obtained his artistic training at the local Art Academy, attending drawing and painting courses. After two years, in Florence, he successfully exhibited his painting "San Sebastiano", which is currently preserved in the Pinacoteca of Palazzo Mansi. During this period, he worked mainly on portraits and genre scenes, subjects in eighteenth-century costumes and historical episodes set in the seventeenth century. In the same year, he moved to Vienna to paint various portraits of members of the Habsburg court, enjoying great success. In fact, when he returned to Italy, he continued to work in this genre, painting the portrait of Umberto I and that of the Royal Family of Siam in Florence. This brought him numerous official recognitions, including the position of resident academic at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence in 1888.
Gelli died in Florence on 30 March 1933.
