Vincenzo Gemito Biography

Vincenzo Gemito (Naples, 16 July 1852 – 1 March 1929). In June 1862 he was adopted by a family who had recently lost a child. His father was a craftsman and young Vincenzo soon began to savor the boundaries of painting and sculpture. He began his activity in the workshop of Emmanuele Caggiano, a sculptor of academic taste, using his plaster casts and making simple portraits, and was later a pupil of Stanislao Lista. Anti-academic by instinct, he soon left his master to work with his contemporary Antonio Mancini and try the path of realism. With his first important work, The Gambler (1888, now in the Capodimonte Museum in Naples), he participated in the 1st Exhibition of the Promoter; in the same years he created a series of busts and figures of beggars and commoners in clay, aiming to immediately stop the metamorphoses of reality. In his last years, Gemito devoted himself to gold and silver goldsmithing, and his intricate and delicate works , are much admired today. In 1952 Italy issued a stamp to commemorate the centenary of his birth.
