Rosso Genovese, Italianized Giovanni Rosa and born with the name Jan Roos in 1591 in Antwerp, trained as a painter in the workshop of Jan de Wael. He arrived in Genoa in 1616 where he obtained a notable amount of work which allowed him to open the most important workshop in the city. He collaborated with several Genoese artists and with Van Dyck, calling his brother-in-law Giacomo Legi, specialized in still lifes, to work with him. While he was an excellent portraitist and painter of biblical or mythological stories, his skill in executing still lifes probably represents his most significant contribution to local painting culture. An interesting element of his works is the inclusion of the human figure within the still life compositions. He died in Genoa in 1638.
