Valentino Ghiglia Biography

Valentino Ghiglia (Florence, 1903 – 1960) was an Italian painter. Valentino Ghiglia was born in Maiano di Fiesole near Florence in 1903. He began painting together with his younger brother Paulo Ghiglia, a portraitist, despite his father Oscar, an already established painter, opposing them; subsequently he understood the passion of the two brothers and came to exhibit together with them. Three other brothers were musicians. Valentino's first solo exhibition took place in 1929 in Milan at the Galleria Pesaro. After this debut he began to participate in several union and inter-union exhibitions, at the Quadrennials of Rome, Trieste and Florence. He stayed several times in Spain and Paris, often going to paint on the Breton coasts. His most characteristic and appreciated production reproduces Nordic landscapes and characteristic views of Paris. Still lifes, flowers and branches with fruit, not without affinity with Japanese art, are also sought after. Many of his paintings were produced around 1940 in the village of Pratovalle near Loro Ciuffenna (Arezzo), where the artist was often a guest for holidays and where his regular summer presences are still remembered by some elderly people.
