Olinto Ghilardi Biography

Olinto Ghilardi (1848-1930) is a painter from Livorno who spent much of his life in India in the city of Calcutta, where he opened a painting school and worked for the most important Indian personalities of the time.
Ghilardi played a role of primary importance in the birth of the Bengal School of Art. he was the teacher and artistic mentor of the artist Abanindranath Tagore, nephew of the famous Indian poet. In particular he taught him the techniques of watercolour, pastel and gauche.
Ghilardi must have returned to Italy in 1905. He began painting on canvas with oil paints.
In 2006, a large work (76 x 42 cm) entitled "Muslim Revolt" was sold at auction.
In 1911, Ghilardi became an active and prominent member of a group of avant-garde artists called the "Gruppo Labronico". One of his most important works within this group was a large painting executed between 1911 and 1914 "Scena Indiana" (oil on canvas) commissioned for the Caffé Livorno, an important landmark in the city of Livorno and a favorite place of the cultural and social elite.
Olinto Ghilardi died in 1930, at the age of 82.
