Andre' Gill Biography

André Gill, pseudonym of Louis-Alexandre Gosset de Guines, was a French illustrator born in Paris on 17 October 1840 and died in Charenton-le-Pont on May 1885.
Gill's first drawings were published around 1859 in various satirical magazines such as Le Charivari and La Lune. He is known for having hosted the poet Arthur Rimbaud for a short time in his house at 89 rue d'Enfer. Gill took an active part in the Paris Commune of 1871 and frequented Gustave Courbet's Artists' Association, becoming administrator in charge of the Musée du Luxembourg. During the legislative elections of 1877 and 1885, he published a pamphlet entitled “The Voting Bulletin”. He was part of the circle of poètes Zutiques with his friend and disciple Émile Cohl. After the fall of the Commune, he abandoned the caricaturist style for a while to move closer to impressionism.
