Edoardo Gioia was born in Rome on 27 September 1862 to Belisario Gioja, a professional painter, who gave him his first pictorial notions. Gioia specialized above all in portraits and decoration, adhering to the Pre-Raphaelite movement. In 1882 he made his debut at the International Art Fair by presenting several works, following his father's style. From 1891 he approached the In Arte Libertas association, in particular Nino Costa, abandoning genre painting to adhere to symbolist and liberty themes. Gioia has always used photography as a basis for developing his paintings, becoming a fundamental medium throughout his career, including for the documentation of various environmental decorations that were later lost. In the early twentieth century he traveled to England for a year, coming into contact with English artists and working as a portrait painter. In 1919 he moved permanently to London continuing his activity as a portraitist. He died in London in 1937.
