Jean Giarault (1924 - 1982) was a French director and set designer. After studying cinema at the École des travaux pratiques, Jean Girault began working alongside Marcel Blistène as an assistant director. He then proved to be very productive in writing screenplays before directing his first film, in 1960, Les Piques-Assiette. After distinguishing himself brilliantly in French comedy, with Pouic-Pouic (1963), he began what would remain a legend of the genre long after his death, the famous Gendarmes series. The success of The Gendarme in Saint-Tropez is such that he continues his adventures through four other parts: The Gendarme in New York (1964), The Gendarme Gets Married (1968), The Gendarme for a Walk (1970), and finally The Gendarme and the extraterrestrials (1978). Shortly before his death, Jean Girault had time to write the screenplay and direct Le Gendarme et les gendarmettes, as if to offer a last adventure to Cruchot and his team, these characters who brought him notoriety within comedy cinema French.
