Mathias Goeritz Biography

Sculptor and architect, Mathias Goeritz was born in Gdansk in 1915. In many works he addressed the relationship between architecture and sculpture, in a concept he himself called "emotional architecture".
Goeritz stayed in many countries such as France, Morocco and Spain, where he was among the founders of the Escuela de Altamira in 1948, before settling in Mexico in 1949. Among his best-known works are the experimental museum "El Eco" in the city of Mexico (1953: a complex of asymmetric alignments creates a succession of surprises and discoveries in the visitor who finds himself in ever-changing spatial situations, in corridors, closures and openings, unexpected perspectives) and the five monumental towers (1958) built on the square public of the satellite city of Mexico City. In 1966, as part of the various initiatives for the Mexican Olympic Games, he designed a "Road of Friendship", 17 km long and lined with sculptures created by sculptors from various countries. A mysterious monumentality is also felt in his wooden figures.
He died in Mexico City in 1949.
