Emilio Gola (Milan, 1851 - Milan, 1923) Of noble origins, he was encouraged to take up art as a teenager by his father, an amateur painter. In 1873 he obtained a degree in industrial engineering at the Polytechnic of Milan; at the same time he dedicated himself to painting under the guidance of Sebastiano De Albertis, completing his training with repeated trips to Holland and Paris. His debut at the Brera Fine Arts Exhibition in 1879 was followed by constant participation in national exhibitions, but he obtained the greatest official recognition at a European level. An appreciated portraitist since the 1980s, his favorite subjects include female figures of the Milanese nobility, represented in their worldly dimension, but adopting a vigorous naturalism. The production of portraits is accompanied by a rich repertoire of Milanese views and Brianza landscapes, translated with a chromatic brightness that constitutes the artist's stylistic signature. Active between Liguria and Venice, in his late production he dedicated himself to the execution of seascapes conducted with great formal synthesis and expressive intensity.
