Frederick Goodall was born on 17 September 1822 in London and was the son of the engraver and decorator named Edward Goodall. He was a painter who specialized in landscapes and scenes of rural life. However, his interest changed when, visiting Egypt, he had the opportunity to work alongside the Bedouin tribes studying and painting landscapes and figures. Thanks to this experience, Goodall became one of the leading English Orientalist painters known for his art appreciated by the British aristocracy and the international market, which was fundamental to his career thanks to the dealer Ernst Gambart.
In addition to Nilotic landscapes, Goodall also tackled biblical subjects from the Old Testament and the Gospel, which became some of his favorite themes. Goodall's works enjoyed great success and received the praise of many notable figures of the time, such as the Prince of Wales, future Edward VII and Charles Dickens. The painter died on 29 June 1904.
