Edoardo Gordiani was born in Florence on 18 January 1866. After finishing his military career, he decided to enroll at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, against his family's wishes. Here he completed his artistic training under the guidance of Augusto Rivalta and Giuseppe Ciaranfi. In 1885 he traveled often to Paris, where he met Édouard Manet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Paul Cézanne. Their influence was decisive for overcoming academic precepts and for the subsequent development of Gordiani's painting, which showed a strong dependence on French post-impressionism. Between 1893 and 1894, Gordiani moved to New York, working successfully for three years. Returning to Italy, he preferred to concentrate his interests on landscape painting and still life, participating in numerous collective exhibitions in the secessionist movement. Gordiani died on 30 January 1961 in Popolano di Marradi (province of Florence).
