Luis Rodríguez Gordillo, better known as Luis Gordillo, is a Spanish artist who was born in Seville in 1934. After studying law, Gordillo decided to follow his true passion and undertook a fine arts course in Seville. In the late 1950s he moved to Paris, where he had the opportunity to meet and work with the local artistic avant-garde.
Gordillo has made a name for himself in Spanish art thanks to his work inspired by the Pop art of the 1960s. He explored the importance of series and repetition as compositional tools and developed a strong interest in meaning and the connection between the world of thought, that of experience and that of aesthetic expression.
His artistic production has evolved over time, embracing new techniques and themes. One of his major contributions to contemporary art was the definition of chromatic strategies inspired by contemporary urban phenomenologies. Gordillo also experimented with documentary photography and popular cultures related to graphics.
Among the numerous exhibitions in which he participated, we must mention in particular Luis Gordillo 1965/2006, organized by the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo in Seville. A retrospective of his pictorial and photographic work was organized by the Reina Sofía National Art Museum in Madrid, where Gordillo himself managed the conceptual organization of the exhibition. In 2010, Gordillo was commissioned to create the poster for the bullfighting season at the Real Maestranza de Caballería in Seville.
