François Marius Granet was a famous painter born in Aix-en-Provence on 17 December 1775. He specialized in depicting cloister interiors. In Paris, he became friends with Anne-Louis Girodet de Roussy-Trioson and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and worked in the studio of Jacques-Louis David. He lived in Rome from 1802 to 1819, where he created refined representations of ancient monuments. Subsequently, returning to Italy in 1822, he worked in Assisi and then in Rome, painting mainly interiors of monuments and historical subjects which allowed him to obtain impressive light effects. Granet had great success throughout Europe and, in 1826, he was given the position of curator of the Louvre. Later, Louis Philippe entrusted him with the direction of the History Museum founded in Versailles. Granet died in Aix-en-Provence on 21 November 1849.
