Bruno Grassi Biography

Bruno Grassi was born in Rhodes in 1944 but grew up in Piacenza, the city of origin of his parents. He attended the "Gazzola" Art Institute in Piacenza, where he studied with the painter Luciano Ricchetti and the art historian Ferdinando Arisi. Subsequently, he graduated in horn at the "Nicolini" Conservatory in Piacenza.
He was discovered by the famous Milanese gallery owner Ettore Gianferrari and was part of the artists represented by the gallery of the same name in Via del Gesù until the owner's death. He has always had a passion for sacred art and his first large fresco, created when he was just over twenty years old in the small church of Biana di Bettola (Piacenza), depicted the pangs of Jesus Christ on the cross. This work was seen by Alberto Cavallari, then director of the "Corriere della sera", who defined it as a masterpiece. However, the painting was removed a few weeks later because it was deemed too cruel by representatives of the local Catholic orthodoxy.
Today, Grassi is part of the "Cà d'Oro" Gallery in Piazza di Spagna 81, in Rome. The critic Marco Valsecchi awarded him the national Bolaffi Arte prize and Vittorio Sgarbi included him among the protagonists of the exhibition on "Padano Surrealism". In 2002, he won the Pen Club's Artist of the Year Award.
