Nicola Grassi was born on 7 April 1682 in Formeaso di Zuglio. During the end of the seventeenth century, he moved to Venice, where he trained in the tailor's art. According to sources, Grassi was a pupil of the renowned portraitist Nicolò Cassana. The painter began his career as a portraitist and in his early works he advocated a seventeenth-century style, but with a touch of realism and psychological analysis. Moderate chiaroscuro is used to underline the physicality of the characters. After spending three years in Turin, Grassi returned to Venice in 1726, where he implemented a new pictorial phase characterized by an increasingly clear and delicate chromaticism. Grassi's artistic heritage, consisting of numerous works, is found in Ampezzo, Muina, Sezza, Cabia (Arta Terme), Tolmezzo and in the museum of Udine. Furthermore, he created the frescoes of various historic buildings in Gorizia. Nicolas Grassi died in Venice on 6 October 1748.
