Giuseppe Grassis, an artist born on 30 March 1870 in Turin, attended the Albertina Academy of Turin from 1887 to 1892, where his main teacher was Pier Celestino Gilardi, who influenced him in his artistic training with the liveliness of his portraits and the realism of his landscapes. In 1892-94, Grassis participated in the Triennial Competition of the Albertina Academy of Fine Arts, where he obtained the gold medal.
From 1897, the artist moved to Liguria, where he received important portrait commissions from noble Genoese families, including the Durazzo and the Centurione.
In the following years, he participated in numerous exhibitions, such as the Italian General Exhibition in Turin in 1898 and the National Fine Arts Exhibition in Rome in 1907.
