Nicolae Grigorescu Biography
Nicolae Grigorescu, born on 15 May 1838 in Pitaru and died on 21 July 1907 in Câmpina, was one of the precursors of modern painting in Romania. In 1861, he moved to Paris where he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts, and then became a member of the Barbizon school, where he met artists such as Jean-François Millet, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Gustave Courbet and Théodore Rousseau, and under their influence developed his plein air painting technique. In 1877, during the Romanian War of Independence, Grigorescu was called to accompany the Romanian army as a "front-line painter". In 1890 he settled in Câmpina, where he mainly painted pastoral themes, portraits of peasant women, ox carts and rural landscapes. In 1899, he was made an honorary member of the Romanian Academy. Nicolae Grigorescu died on 21 July 1907 in Câmpina.
