Gaetano Grillo Biography

(Molfetta, 1952) He trained at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan at the Alik Cavaliere School of Sculpture, where new languages were experimented with in the early Seventies. He made his debut at a very young age with performative interventions but already in 1976 he titled his first solo show at the Solferino Gallery in Milan I'm happy when I paint!. In the nineties Grillo was very interested in Egyptian hieroglyphs; he begins to paint the first "palimpsests" and to develop an encrypted alphabet that contains all the letters that the artist collects from every time and every culture. This special alphabet will constitute one of the main characteristics of his work. He has held several solo exhibitions in important European galleries and museums; he participated in the Quadrennial of Rome, the Biennials of Milan, Venice and Medelline. Together with Bonami, Arcangelo, Natà and Rotelli, he was part of the Stazione Centrale group, which formed at the Studio Cannaviello in Milan in 1985. He is a teacher of Painting at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts where he is also Director of the School of Painting. He founded and directs the Academy of Fine Arts magazine, an artistic-editorial project that reconnects the Italian academic world to the world of contemporary art for the first time.
