Marcel Gromaire Biography

Marcel Gromaire (Noyelles-sur-Sambre, 24 July 1892 – Paris, 11 April 1971) was a French painter. Of French and Flemish origins, he became passionate about painting and initially taught himself artistically. Gromaire subsequently perfected his skills at the Montparnasse Academy and attended the atelier of Matisse's students. He was forced to interrupt his activity due to the outbreak of the First World War, during which he enlisted in the Transalpine army. In the early post-war period his style came closer to that of Léger and his themes to those of Matisse. His style has been defined as expressionistic, but Gromaire did not exclude innovative European tendencies from the spirit of his works, in such a way as to be able to compare it to the school of Lhote and La Fresnaye. In 1937 he decorated the Sèvres pavilion at the Universal Exhibition in Paris and began a series of cartoons for tapestries, proposing himself as an innovative master of modern tapestry: among the works of this genre we can mention The Four Elements (1938) and The Four Seasons. He works at the Aubusson Manufacture, together with Lurçat. He took part in the 1959 Paris Biennial.
