Orlando Grosso Biography

Orlando Grosso was born in Genoa in 1882. From 1891 to 1898 he completed his classical studies at the Collegio Nazionale Umberto I in Turin and then at the Collegio Nazionale Cristoforo Colombo in Genoa and starting from 1898 he followed Begey's drawing courses. In the field of painting he specialized attending Giuseppe Pennasilico's studies and enrolling in the courses of the Accademia Ligustica, which he attended only in the academic year 1903-4. In fact, he matured his pictorial experience at the Pennasilico studio, where he remained as a close collaborator from 1902/3 to 1906. Here he executed sketches for large canvases, for example for the portrait of the Genoese Wanda Paola Lottero (Spotorno 1880- Genoa 1963), who married Ermanno Carlo, Prince of Saxe-Weimar on 5 September 1909 in London. In 1908 he won a public competition for the position of Inspector of the artistic collections of the Castello Sforzesco in Milan. Thanks to this suitability, in 1909 the local historian Gaetano Poggi called him to fill the position of Secretary of the artistic section of the Fine Arts Office of the Municipality of Genoa. This newborn office, established in 1905, was supposed to administer and manage the artistic, archaeological, historical and scientific heritage of the Municipality of Genoa, with the associated galleries and museums, acquired buildings, etc. This assignment represents the turning point in his career. He died in Bonassola in 1968.
