Gruppo Mid Biography

The MID Group (Mutamento Immagine Dimensione) was founded in 1964 and between the Sixties and Seventies represented one of the most advanced fronts of the international avant-garde, inaugurating a new era in the definition of the work of art. Its protagonists, in the wake of the previous movements of Kinetic and Programmed Art, created works of optical-abstract conception, using the newest inventions of electronics, lighting technology, Cybernetics and visual communication, making the spectator an active part of the aesthetic event, thus anticipating, in a certain sense, digital and multimedia art. Unlike their precursors, however, they began a close contact with design and, at the same time, were able to accompany their work with a theoretical reflection animated by political-social issues closely linked to the events of their time. The protagonists of this season were Alfonso Grassi, Gianfranco Laminarca, Alberto Marangoni and Antonio Barrese.
