Francesco Guardi Biography
Francesco Guardi was born in Venice on 5 October 1712.
His artistic training began in his father's workshop, then continued as an assistant to his brother, also a painter.
Later, in his twenties, Guardi became an assistant at the studio of Michele Marieschi, known for his works of architecture and landscape painting. His art was not inferior to that of Giovanni Antonio Canal, better known as Canaletto, also famous as a painter of views.
In 1757 he married Maria Mathea Pagani, with whom he had five children. One of them, Giacomo, inherited his father's shop. Pietro Gradenigo, a nobleman who knew him well, described him as a "good pupil of the famous Canaletto".
In 1784, at the age of almost seventy, he was elected member of the Venetian Academy of Painting.
Francesco Guardi died in Venice on 1 January 1793 and, upon his death, approximately 850 works were attributed to him. He is considered one of the most original painters of the 18th century, and his fame and posthumous success have led many imitators and forgers to try to replicate his unique style.
