Maimouna Guerresi Biography
Maimouna Guerresi (1951 - ) is a multimedia artist who dedicates herself to photography, sculpture and the creation of installations and who focuses on the relationship between women and society. His works, expressions of the dual identity formed by the harmonious texture of two cultures, Western and African, are characterized by a marked contemplative and spiritual sensitivity: through a metaphysical language that is expressed in calligraphic writings, costumes and characters, Guerresi's art combines mystical references and "miraculous" influences, with an expressive audacity full of underlying symbolism and aesthetic contemplations. Born in Veneto, Guerresi graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice and, after a period of experimentation with painting and drawing, dedicated himself to photography. His early photographic work was inspired by the Body Art movement, often incorporating mythological and ritual themes. Throughout the 1980s, Guerresi participated in solo exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale and Documenta K18 in Kassel, Germany. In the early 1990s, Guerresi traveled to Africa where she encountered Muslim culture and eventually converted to Islam.
