Franco Guerzoni Biography

Franco Guerzoni (1948 - ) was born in 1948 in Modena, where he lives and works. He began his personal exploration of the world of archeology in the early Seventies, with particular attention to the stratification of culture and the idea of "ancient" as subtraction and loss. He seeks precise methods for the representation of the image, also rendered through the photographic medium, accompanied by continuous comparison with his peers (including Vaccari, Parmiggiani and Ghirri). In the 1980s the artist took part in a widespread rediscovery of pictorial sensitivity, driven by the attraction for matter in its pure state. First through chalky layers on large wallpapers that investigate an imaginary geography (Travel Maps, Grotesques, The Forgotten Wall) and then, in 1990, with the presentation of the exhibition project Decorations and Ruins. Since the 1990s he has continued his investigation into the concept of time and the poetics of ruins in large cycles of works. Abandoned places, domestic architecture and industrial spaces, archaic homes in ruins emerge on the pictorial surface with the dignity of intense imaginative apparitions.
