Guido Guidi Biography

Born in 1941 in Cesena, where he lives and works. Since 1956 he has been in Venice where he first studied Architecture at the IUAV and subsequently Industrial Design, following the courses of Luigi Veronesi and Italo Zannier among others. It is in the lively climate of the Venetian period that he decides to continuously dedicate himself to photography. Since the end of the sixties he has carried out important personal research, investigating the landscape and its transformations and at the same time experimenting with photographic language. For years he has combined his profession as a photographer with teaching and promotion activities in photography: in 1989 he started Linea di Confine per la Fotografia Contemporanea in Rubiera, with Paolo Costantini and William Guerrieri. Since the same year he has been teaching photography at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ravenna and since 2001 he has taught at the IUAV in Venice. Guido Guidi was among the first in Italy to photograph the marginal and anti-spectacular landscape of the province. His research on the spontaneous construction of eastern Romagna, or on the Strada Romea that connects Cesena to Venice, or his subsequent research on the industrial areas of Porto Marghera and Ravenna focus on liminal places, familiar to the photographer, and share an open and questioning character. The work he has conducted over the years is an operation similar to that of a "stratigraphic excavation". Without imposing preconceived ideas, he systematically collects the signs of the past and present: his photographs bring to light the traces accumulated by man, activating thoughts - his own and those of others - in the moment in which the photograph is looked at, in the incessant search for answers to the perplexity aroused by a changing and increasingly precarious reality.
