Gutfreund participated in numerous exhibitions in his native country, Germany and France and was introduced to artists such as Juan Gris and Pablo Picasso, to name a few. Gutfreund was in France at the start of World War I and enlisted in the French Foreign Legion; he fought in the battles of the Somme, L'Artois and Champagne regions.
After the war, Gutfreund returned to his hometown of Dvůr Králové nad Labem and began creating and exhibiting works of art. He subsequently received the appointment of professor of architectural sculpture in Prague at the College of Decorative Arts.
