Vittorio Gussoni Biography

Vittorio Gussoni was born in Milan on 12/18/1893. Coming from a family of artists, he learned the first basics of drawing from his father. He subsequently enrolled at the Brera Academy where he was a pupil of Cesare Tallone before the war and of Ambrogio Alciati after. In 1922 he exhibited for the first time at the Brera Biennale and was immediately appointed an honorary member of the Academy. He married Laura Mengolini in the church of S. Siro in Sanremo. He carried out his activity between Milan and Sanremo, exhibiting with personal exhibitions throughout Italy He executed many portraits to order both in Italy and abroad, especially in the United States of America and South Africa. He cultivated several friendships both in the world of art and culture (Giuseppe di Stefano, Giovanni Barrella, Carlo Daiuto, Carlo Carrà, Aligi Sassu, Orio Vergani) At the end of the 1950s he retired to Sanremo where he died on 12/31/1968 and was buried in the family tomb. His painting continues the noblest traditions, a complete artist, he does not shy away from treat landscapes, animals, still lifes with ease, but he is to be considered more especially a figure painter. The female figures, always sinuous, persuasive, sometimes provocative, have Spanish references; among them one, his favorite model, accompanied him over the years. He had a profound knowledge of the technique in its vastest and most subtle range, joyfully exalting its chromatic values. Many portraits and other paintings are in private collections and galleries, one of his self-portraits is exhibited at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Despite the numerically limited production and therefore few works on the market, the most famous world auction houses treat his paintings with ever-increasing prices.
