Janos Hajnal Biography

Jànos Hajnal known as Giovanni (Budapest, 27 August 1914 - Rome, 9 October 2010) was a Hungarian-born Italian artist and illustrator, considered one of the major contemporary authors of stained glass windows and mosaics. Hungarian by birth, he graduated from the Budapest Academy, where he obtained prizes and scholarships; he then attended the Academies of Frankfurt, Stockholm and Rome. He began his artistic career as a book illustrator, an activity he continued to cultivate later. At eighteen he made his first trip to Italy, walking from Budapest to Florence to admire Italian art. He moved permanently to Italy, to Rome, in 1948, at the age of thirty-five. Here his work focused mainly on stained glass windows and mosaics. He obtained Italian citizenship for artistic merit in 1958. In 1992 he was awarded the Cross of Civil Valor, the highest Hungarian honor in the cultural field, by the President of the Hungarian Republic. He was unanimously nominated by the Hungarian University Council Magister Rerum Artium Honoris Causa of the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest. In 2002 he was appointed Commander of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic by President Ciampi. He died in Rome on 9 October 2010.
