Edward Hale lived in London and Godalming. He studied in Paris from 1873 to 1875 with Alexander Cabanel and Carolus-Duran, and from 1877 to 1878 he worked as a war artist for the Illustrated London News with the Russian army and later in Afghanistan. Most of the scenes depicted in his works are of military or sea life. He has exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Society of British Artists, the Grosvener Gallery, the New Gallery and elsewhere.
