Halicki moved from his hometown of New York to California, where he worked extensively on vehicles and eventually started his own towing and impounding business. His company, H.B. Halicki Mercantile Co. & Junk Yard, specialized in antique cars and toys.
In 1974, Halicki wrote, directed, produced and starred in the film Gone in 60 Seconds, based on his personal experiences. The film, which did not follow a traditional script, featured Halicki as an actor and car supplier. Additionally, he used repeated footage and footage of public incidents to expand the footage.
Halicki began work on the sequel to the hit film in 1989, Gone in 60 Seconds 2, in which he would again play the role of car thief Colt, with Denice Shakarian as computer guru and thief Alaska Wells.
However, while filming in Dunkirk and Buffalo, New York, on August 20, 1989, Halicki was preparing one of the film's most dangerous sequences, during which a 150-foot-tall water tower was supposed to fall to the ground.
Unfortunately, a cable unexpectedly broke and hit a telephone pole, which fell on Halicki, killing him instantly. The incident occurred in an area behind the former JH Williams Instrument Factory on 400 Vulcan Street in Buffalo.
Halicki's legacy has been to tell exciting stories through the use of cars and great stunts. Although his career was tragically cut short by his death, Halicki remains an iconic figure of 70s and 80s action cinema.
