Henri Joseph Harpignies was born in Valenciennes on 28 July 1819, and died on 28 August 1916 in Saint-Privé, Yonne. He approached the study of painting late. In 1850 he visited Italy, in Rome and Naples, and then made his debut at the 1853 Salon with “View of Capri” and “Mulattiera”. His favorite subjects were the woods and the countryside. His paintings, however, were processed in the studio, thus creating compositions with flat tones devoid of resonance and a distorted light. Harpignies painted preferably landscapes of central France. With great sensitivity, but without a creative streak of his own, he was easily influenced by the works of others.
He died on 28 August 1916 in Saint-Privé (Yonne).
