Omar Hassan Biography

Omar Hassan (1987 - ) graduated from the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in 2010 and, after having participated in various solo and collective exhibitions, in 2011 he was invited to perform at the 54th edition of the Venice Biennale. After 10 years of training in the ring as a professional boxer, Hassan is suddenly disqualified due to being diagnosed with diabetes; finding himself unable to fully explore his passion, the artist invests all his energies in artistic practice, his second love. In a series of paintings entitled “Breaking Through” Hassan combines painting and performance in vigorous gestural technique, inspired by his career as a boxer. Hassan finds inspiration in the work of pioneers of the Graffiti movement such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and the masterful abstractions of Jackson Pollock; Furthermore, both his works on multilayer canvas and those in plaster or bronze reflect his attention to the materiality of surfaces. Hassan has created various public works in Italy and the United Kingdom. These include “One Wall” at the Palazzo della Regione Lombardia in Milan, the Mille Miglia Museum in Brescia, the Aldo Galli Academy of Fine Arts in Como and “Colour Cube” at Brick Lane in London.
