Raoul Hausmann Biography

Raoul Hausmann (Vienna, 12 July 1886 - Limoges, 1 February 1971) was a German artist. Raoul Hausmann represents one of the key figures of Berlin Dada and of the figurative art culture of the 20th century. His experimental photographic collages, multi-material assemblages, sound poems and criticisms of institutions had a profound influence on the European avant-garde of the post-war period. And it is certainly no coincidence that his "mechanical head" from 1920 is considered one of the icons of the 20th century. He lived for a long time in Berlin and Weimar as a teacher at the Bauhaus. During Nazism, to escape the persecution that hit the exponents of the avant-garde, he moved first to Ibiza, then to Zurich, Prague and finally Limoges, where he stopped after the war and where he lived until his death. He played a central role in the Berlin Dada movement, working in particular in the photographic field. He is considered the inventor of photomontage, a technique which he passed on to Paul Citroen, his favorite student. In the 1960s his figure and his vision also had a great influence on American pop art artists, such as Yves Klein and Robert Rauschenberg who had important exchanges of letters with him
