Francesco Hayez (1791-1882) had a neoclassical education as a youth. Originally from Venice, in 1809 he moved to Rome where he came into contact with Antonio Canova of whom he became a friend and student. Having moved to Milan in 1820, in this city he picked up the legacy of the greatest Italian neoclassical painter: Andrea Appiani. His pictorial style was formed by a decidedly neoclassical language which he never lost even in his romantic phase. His romanticism is in fact only a thematic choice. In 1820 he created his first medieval-inspired painting «Pietro Rossi prisoner of the Scaligeri» which was considered the manifesto of Italian romanticism. Two years later he created the painting "The Sicilian Vespers".
