Ferdinand Heilbuth was a French painter of German origin, born in Hamburg on 27 June 1826 and died in Paris on 19 November 1889. Arriving in Paris shortly before the Second Republic, at a young age, Heilbuth settled there to continue his artistic studies . Between 1853 and 1855, he frequently visited Rome, where he developed historical paintings and portraits following the style of Titian. It was then that he decided to become a genre painter, excellent in the liveliness of his colors and the emphasis given to expression. A founding member of the Society of French Watercolourists, he presented some watercolors and many paintings from the period between 1876 and 1880 which, although leaving some characters in a draft state, are nevertheless considered of great value. Ferdinand Heilbuth died in Paris in 1889.
