Johann Ernst Heinsius was a well-known German portraitist and miniaturist, born in Ilmenau on 21 May 1731 and died on 18 October 1794 in Erfurt. After abandoning the profession of gunsmith, he devoted himself to painting and became active at the court of Rudolstädt. Among his most important works is the portrait of Duchess Anne-Amélie de Brunswick, painted in 1773. Furthermore, Heinsius also painted the portrait of Goethe. In 1772, he was appointed to head the Wilhelmsburg painting gallery in Weimar, but the fire of the castle in 1774 deprived him of this role. Heinsius died in Erfurt on 18 October 1794.
